SSM supports Madison Youth Arts Center

SUZUKI STRINGS IS 30 YEARS STRONG

Let's celebrate by making our mark on the MYAC facility.

Join SSM in celebrating 30 years of music and families as we move to our new home in the Madison Youth Arts Center. A gift of $30, or any amount you choose, will go toward our goal of having SSM represented on MYAC's Wall of $1,000.

Any donations that take us over the $1,000 mark will go into our own fund for Suzuki Strings of Madison scholarships to help SSM families with group and private lesson tuition. Be a part of the future of SSM! Donations are being accepted through 5/30. Thank you for your support.

Group class Spring Break 3/30, April Review

Spring Greetings !

NO GROUP CLASSES Tuesday, March 30,2021. We resume Tuesday, April 6, 2021.

Hard to believe that the snow has melted and we are officially in the season of Spring. Spring is a season of new beginnings and growth. As Suzuki students there are many ways to plant seeds (intentions) in our home practice so that we can harvest our musical garden ( beautiful playing). What kind of seeds are you planting this spring?

During this year long pandemic period Suzuki Strings has continued to offer private and group classes as well as solo recitals. Sonora has safely met and most recently recorded for Bach Around the Clock. The commitment to SSM by our families, faculty and Board of Directors has shown the resilience of our student body . We adapted. We continued to stay connected and thrived during this unprecedented time.

We are now ready to set sights on the future of SSM in our new group class space at the Madison Youth Arts Center and look towards program development and expansion as we enter a new decade. Our focus continues to be on providing encouraging quality teaching and a space for musical growth for our students which supports Shinichi Suzuki’s belief that, “when love is deep, much can be accomplished.”

Latest News on Suzuki Strings of Madison’s Future Home

Since 1990, SSM has been proud to foster the growth of hundreds of musicians in Madison and beyond. Throughout that time, our community has met in churches and schools, but our dream has always been to teach and perform in a space dedicated to the arts. We are excited to announce an opportunity to achieve that dream! The soon-to-open Madison Youth Arts Center. We will be able to utilize space at MYAC for group classes, play-ins, concerts and recitals, while private lessons will remain in their current locations.

The planned opening date of the center is fall of 2021. Centrally located at the corner of Mifflin and North Ingersoll, the building will include 15 studio/rehearsal spaces ranging from 550 to 2000 square feet, a flexible performance space that will seat about 120, a theater with about 300 fixed seats, a scene production shop, storage and office space and onsite parking. SSM looks forward to starting this new chapter in its long and varied life. MYAC will provide us with a stable home base. There will be changes but also the chance for growth. We are excited about the adventure ahead for the following reasons:

    • The comfort and beauty of a new building designed for performing arts instruction specifically for young people.

    • The opportunity to empower our students’ growth through collaborations with other string programs and different arts organizations such as Madison Youth Choirs and Children’s Theatre of Madison.

    • Expanded access for young violinists throughout Madison and Dane County  strengthening our program’s diversity.

    • The partnership will increase SSM’s visibility locally and nationally.

    • It will allow SSM’s legacy to flourish.

Stay tuned for more exciting information and follow us on the SSM Facebook page. On Tuesday, May 18 we will have a virtual meeting to share details and answer your many questions. For now, please enjoy the video and other information found at the link below.

Tuning your instrument during Wisconsin weather

Oh the weather outside is frightful! And keeping your violin in tune is not delightful.

With drier conditions in our homes please make sure that your students violin is properly humidified. This can be done as simply as a damp piece of sponge ( squeezed out of course ) in a plastic film or gum canister poked with holes to act as a humidifier in the case for your violin. OR until you can purchase a commercial device , you can use a plastic baggie and sponge as well.

Rachel is offering a special student discount for her weekly performances : 20 percent discount code is available from your studio teacher .

I wanted to offer a student discount for my new weekly concertos show, but the presenter doesn’t have a way to do that on their website. Prepare your own recital - a lovely gift of music to share ❤️

PREPARE YOUR OWN HOLIDAY RECITAL!

During this time, Suzuki Strings of Madison students and faculty would be busy preparing for solo recitals and our annual Holiday concerts.  And families would be anticipating visits with family and friends.  But of course, due to the pandemic, these usual occurrences aren’t possible this year.

So, let’s make some new “pandemic traditions!”  One of the silver linings of this difficult time is being able to share video and audio with people far and near via Zoom, Facetime and other apps.  With these mediums, you can create your own personal recital and perform it live for family and friends or make a recital video and send it to them as a gift.  We invite you to do this anytime between now and the first week of January.

Here’s how:

• Plan your recital

1. Choose what you want to play from the Suzuki repertoire, holiday tunes,

Fiddle tunes (music can be found on the SSM website here: http://www.suzukistringsofmadison.org/forms-and-materials)

or any other music you like to play.  Consider invitingother family members who play an instrument or sing to join you on your recital.

2. Decide what order you want to play your pieces.

3. Make a recital program. Type or hand write the name of the pieces and the composer (if known) in the order you want to perform. You could decorate it and make a cover with some art work by you or a family member, or use favorite photos. Be creative! Download the program so it can be screen shared during the recital.

4. Make a list of who you want to invite. Please include your private and group class teachers! We want to come, too!

5. Choose a date and time for your recital.

• Prepare for your recital

1. Practice and polish your pieces!

2. Send out invitations with the date, time and the zoom or other app invitation.

3. Invite people to have a snack to enjoy after the recital for a virtual reception!

4. Play a trial run of your recital for family members and some stuffed toys!

5. Prepare your recital space and computer technology for the best picture and sound.

• Performance

1. Dress nice!

2. Have family members present for a live audience.

3. Have your recital program ready to screen share, or announce each piece before you perform it.

4. Ask a family member to run the computer for you so all you have to do is play your violin. Before and after the performance, use gallery view; during the performance, use speaker view.

5. Enjoy sharing your music and all the time and effort you have applied to your violin playing!

6. Enjoy visiting with your family and friends with snacks after the performance!

We are so proud of the time and effort you have devoted to your violin playing and all the progress you have made!  And thank you, parents, for your dedication to your child’s musical education!  Happy Holidays!
